Rocky Planets at Home and Abroad
New observational and theoretical breakthroughs are revealing both similarities and major differences between rocky planets in the solar system and exoplanets. Here I give an overview of our current state of knowledge in this area. I first review recent advances in solar system research, with a particular focus on Mars. I then discuss our emerging understanding of the atmospheres and potential habitability of rocky planets around red dwarf stars, and finally propose some promising directions for future efforts.
